I believe in estate planning. It is more than my livelihood – it is a guiding force in my life. I have seen first-hand with my own family how estate planning works, and where it fails. We are all facing an uncertain time right now. These are times that easily provoke anxiety, fear, and panic. We ask: How long will this go on? How long will I have to be away from friends and family? What if someone I depend on gets sick? What if I get sick?
Planning for the worst-case scenario is something that often gets pushed to the side. “I’ll do that later” is something I hear from potential clients, friends, and others when they learn that I am an estate planner. “Yeah, I know it’s important, but I don’t have time”, or “I’m not wealthy, I don’t need to plan”.
Chances are that you do have time now, and now estate planning is more important than ever. A pandemic, accidents, or passing away from natural unavoidable decline does not discriminate. End of life does not care if you are old or young, rich or poor, prepared or unprepared. Admittedly it took me several years to get my family’s estate planning done, and I’m an estate planner! I get it. It’s not fun to think about and it’s not fun to plan for.
I have seen the flip side. Unplanned or poorly planned estates, even small ones, can go through probate and take years to settle. Poor planning can lead to chaos. A void of medical directives can leave family wondering what your wishes are. Now more than ever we can support our loved ones and healthcare system by having a plan in place.
I know times are hard. Our world has changed dramatically in a shockingly short amount of time. Sometimes I have to consult a calendar to know what day it is. Just reading the news is a gamble with one’s mental health. Many people have lost their jobs or been downsized and now wonder how they will pay their bills.
For those of you who want to work with a lawyer to create your estate plan but are hesitant because of your financial situation, I am here to help. I will work with you to make sure you get protected now. We are a family business, and we understand the value of community. We are committed now more than ever to supporting people, working with their budgets, and addressing their immediate estate planning needs. Let’s get started today.
